How do I start the process of getting a Tree-Mendous Attraction?

Your Adventure Journey begins by contacting us to have an initial conversation, and with information about your project including any available photos, site plan, topography, draft concepts, drone footage, budget, etc. This will help us to get a better idea on how Tree-Mendous can provide the best solutions for your project.

Once we reviewed the information and have some understanding of your needs, one of our team members will schedule a phone call with you to discuss the project in further detail before moving forward to arrange a site visit.

After the site visit, we will have gained a better understanding of the needs, feasibility, timeframe and cost of the project. From there, you can determine if you are interested in moving forward with your project proposal and plan to proceed with scheduling a build.

The Attraction I'm interested in may be out of my budget. What can I do?

All is not lost - we have options available for you! Our range of services can be customized to fit your goals and budget.

  • Most of our attractions can be built in phases to meet the needs of our customers budgets and cashflow. Building an attraction in phases allows you to start small, then add onto the attraction over time as your budget allows.
  • We can assist with financing options for both commercial and residential projects, allowing you to make smaller payments over a longer period of time. In addition to financing options, we offer support in sponsorship and fundraising initiatives and concepts.
  • In certain instances we offer revenue share and/or partnership opportunities that can drastically reduce your upfront investment cost.

What if I don't have trees?

Not everyone has trees which are ideal for constructing attractions of any type. Not everyone has trees at all! If this is the case for your location, we still have solutions.

We can provide “trees” for you, using natural Black Locust logs that vary from 25’-100’(depending on application) with fully engineered foundations. We are able to build on almost any surface including rock, concrete, exhisting buildings & structures, both outdoors and indoors.

How do you take tree health into account when building in trees?

The design process begins with a professional inspection and selection of healthy trees that will continue to thrive over time. A well designed and maintained attraction in a healthy well-maintained tree has the potential to last as long as the tree.

Our platform installation is accomplished using a proprietary friction lock and wrap system, or our patented Treerific Tree Tab System. With the friction lock and wrap method, we do not drill or screw into your trees. The health of your trees is crucial to the safety and longevity of your attraction.

We recommend that you also enlist the help of a certified arborist to evaluate the health of your trees. An arborist may also identify any work needed to prepare the site for your project. Once the attraction is complete, we recommend an inspection be performed on an annual basis by a certified arborist to evaluate the trees utilized by the attraction. This may prevent failures due to the ability of the arborist to identify early warning signs.

What materials and products are used in a Tree-Mendous build?

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia): For our primary structural wood, we utilize locally and sustainably sourced Black Locust logs which provide our signature unique appearance, as well as support our efforts to minimize our enviornmental impact and carbon footprint. Black locust is one of the Northern Hemispheres most rot and insect resistant species. We work with all shapes and sizes from 1 ½” – 24” Diameters and 40’ – 100’ long.

Eastern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar: Depending on your project location we attempt to source local cedar. This helps with shipping costs and the overall environmental impact of your project. We stock many Rough Dimensional sizes of Eastern White Cedar at our fabrication shop. The sizes we typically stock are 1x, 2x, 4x4 and 4x6. We also stock Eastern White Cedar Rounds in sizes ranging from 2” x 8’ to 6” x 8’ these are great for railings, log furniture and other outdoor products. Depending on the location of the project and availability of lumber, we occasionally will utilize white oak or larch as these are also exceptionally rot resistant and strong.

Finishes: To finish the exterior of our attractions, we primarily use penetrating oil based varnish which gives the lumber a more vibrant color finish, and can easily be reapplied without issues. For year-round (no off-season) attractions, significantly large scaled or heavily net based attractions, we may utilize a bleaching process in favor of an oil based varnish, as reapplying the varnish to maintain the vibrant color can be a time consuming and expensive undertaking. The bleaching process creates a more "aged" effect.

We do not use regular paint unless it is specifically requested. We prefer to demonstrate the natural beauty of the wood rather than mask it.

Nets: We utilize naturally-colored custom fabricated netting manufactured in Germany, then custom fitted and assembled in the US. All of our netting meets the standards of ASTM, ANSI and OSHA.

Hardware & Fasteners: We use the highest quality specialized hardware to build safe and long-lasting attractions in trees or on poles. We use this same hardware in all of our builds across the country.

Do you repair or add to existing attractions?

Although we primarily provide maintenance services to the attractions constructed by Tree-Mendous, we occasionally do repairs and reconfigurations to existing attractions. The first step is a service consultation to determine the scope and costs of the project. After the initial consultation we would require an onsite inspection to determine the condition of the existing attraction. Beyond the initial consultation costs, we would base the repair costs on time, material, and travel costs.

How does permitting work for an attraction?

During the design stage and prior to building, it's important to research code standards, zoning regulations, and permitting pertaining to the attraction in your local jurisdiction. You should research the requirements for amusement devices in your state, as this is the section of the health and safety code that our attracions generally fall into.

In most scenarios, obtaining a permit for Tree-Mendous Attraction is similar to the process for any other commercial construction project. In these cases, it is generally necessary to consult an architect and engineer to produce construction documents and drawings. Regulations differ widely per jurisdiction; contact your local building, zoning, and health departments to understand the regulations specific to your area.

While you're researching your local regulations, make sure to consider how your project will affect your neighbors. Will your new, high occupancy attraction cause issues or disturb your neighbors? Will your structure obstruct their existing view? Undoubtedly, you'll want to be conscientious of the impacts to your neighbors as they may have influence on what you may be permitted to construct.

It's also important to consider your property options. If you're looking for property with the intention of building an attraction, AirBnB rental or park, you have the luxury of checking the building codes for each area you are considering. This may enable you to buy property where you know you will be allowed to build an attraction.

Your local building department will dictate what you need for your permitting application, if required in your area. Before approaching your building department about your project, it may be helpful to prepare responses to the following questions:

  • What is the purpose/intended use of the attraction?
  • What is the square footage or total length of the attraction?
  • What is the height from ground to top of the attraction?
  • Where is the attraction located on the property? (You may need a site plan.)
  • Are there any additional concerns as they apply to a commercial property (parking, ADA access, utility access and capacity, adequate facilities, ect)

Although permitting may seem daunting, Tree-Mendous successfully obtains permits for attractions across the country for all the projects that require it. The building code is not intended to inhibit innovative ideas or technological advances, it is meant to provide for the safety and well being of participants and staff. We have found that the vast majority of jurisdictions support our industry, but sometimes require professional guidance to fully understand it.

Can design services be contracted independently from construction services?

Yes, our design services can be contracted independently. Our independent design services range from creating only a conceptual design, to producing a full set of permitted construction drawings with our in-house engineers. It’s important to note that we do not provide consultation other than design and/ or build to individuals building zip lines, suspension bridges, netted attractions or any other cable stayed element. With some independent design projects, we can also assist with the specialized installation techniques and then leave the standard construction to your contractor or construction team.
